Adding Compounds to Diets

Adding test compounds to standard and custom grain-based diets and to purified diets is an effective, accurate, and convenient means of dosing your animals for research purposes.

Adding nutritional ingredients to standard “off-the-shelf” LabDiet® feed is an effective (and economical) way of testing nutrient variables. (See Modified LabDiet® Grain-Based Diets.)

Compounds can be added to regular pellets, precision tablets, powder, liquid, and gels.

We provide the service of homogeneously blending compounds into standard LabDiet® feed, TestDiet® modified & custom grain-based diets, and TestDiet® standard and custom purified diets.  This is particularly effective for conducting nutritional studies, studying the effects of existing pharmaceuticals, and testing new drug formulas.

With precision and consistency, we can homogeneously blend in virtually any compound, chemical, medication, or nutrient.  The diets can be color-coded for easy identification by technical staff.  We then can provide these products in a convenient efficient size and form—extruded pellets, tablets, or powder (meal); many can be made into a suspendable or soluble form for liquid diets.

Be particularly attentive to correctly determine dosages.

We never compromise on the integrity of our products—we never endanger the validity and accuracy of your research, nor the safety and health of your animals and staff. Therefore, we do not handle any toxins, carcinogens, mutagens, radioactive substances, controlled dangerous substances (CDS), or live organisms (viruses, bacteria, etc.). Thus, you are assured that no dangerous or deleterious cross-contamination will occur.

For any test compound, a Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS), Generally Regarded As Safe (GRAS), or a statement regarding its safety and handling is required. We reserve the right to accept or reject a test compound based on our evaluation of its safety

In some cases, the customer will supply compounds; in other cases, at the customer’s request, TestDiet® may obtain the compound for you. In either case, TestDiet® adds compounds to diets strictly for research on your own laboratory animals.

Procedures

Prior to sending us any compound, we ask that you provide us with a Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS) for the compound if one is available, or in the alternative, a Generally Regarded as Safe (GRAS) certificate, or similar technical data.  You will also be requested to complete a one-page Request to Add Compounds/Medications Form (PDF format).  This is a simple procedure designed to assure that we handle your compounds efficiently, effectively, and safely. Please do not mail any additives to our TestDiet facility until your MSDS has been approved or you have spoken to a TestDiet nutritionist.

• We will produce as little as 0.5 kg of diet with added compounds; however, the minimum charge is for 10 kg of diet.

• Production time is usually five business days after we have received all compounds, material transfer documentation, purchase order, and your approval of the formula.

• Usually, you should plan on a small additional
increment of compound to compensate for loss during processing.

• We will return to you the original container containing any excess compound, or empty if all the compound is used.

• We regularly supply LabDiet® feeds with added Fenbendazole, Doxycycline, and "Sulfa-Trim." To add other veterinary medications, prior authorization from your veterinarian may be required. Request to Add Compounds/Medications Form.
