“South Beach” Diets
South Beach-type diets for laboratory animals are designed to emulate the diet characteristics outlined by Arthur Agatston, M.D., in his several “South Beach Diet” publications for weight-loss and the treatment of obesity. (See www.SouthBeachDiet.com )
These diets are typically unusually low in carbohydrate energy (≈20%) with about equal amounts of energy (≈40%) from fat and protein.
In collaboration with researchers, Purina TestDiet® can produce “South Beach-type” diets for any species, tailored to the unique needs of any experimental protocol. Two such diets for rodents are part of our new TestDiet® 21st Century Western Diet Series™:
Purina TestDiet® Formula #5TVW is a South Beach-type Diet for Rodents based on AIN-93G, with approximate energy being derived from protein at 38 kcal%, from fat at 40 kcal%, and from carbohydrate at 22 kcal%, with a Protein:Fat ratio of ≈1:1. In keeping with the “South Beach” paradigm, this diet contains no animal fat, reduced saturated fat, increased unsaturated fat, complex carbohydrates, and increased fiber.
Formula #5TVW can be used in conjunction with Purina TestDiet® Formula #5TVX, a South Beach-type Control Diet, with normal Fat & Protein based on AIN-93G. This is a “normal” diet with approximate energy being derived from protein at 20 kcal%, from fat at 16 kcal%, and from carbohydrate at 64 kcal%, with a Protein:Fat ratio of ≈5:4.
These formulas may be used “as is,” or may be used as the starting point for myriad variations to meet specific and unique research needs.
