We can alter the carbohydrate concentration of any grain-based LabDiet® formula; however, carbohydrate adjustments of grain-based diets are not as common as adjustments of proteins and fats; nevertheless, diets with higher and lower carbohydrate concentrations are possible.
Lower-carbohydrate grain-based diets are formulated by adjustments to several carbohydrate-containing ingredients and by restricting the primary sources of carbohydrate. More common would be the increase of carbohydrate by addition of a refined ingredient such as cornstarch or sucrose, being careful not to “dilute” other nutrients. (See About Diet Formulas.)
Cholesterol – Cholic Acid – Atherosclerosis Note: Many diets with added cholesterol also incorporate cholic acid (sodium cholate) to very effectively facilitate cholesterol absorption/utilization. However, cholic acid appears to be contraindicated for atherosclerosis studies and is not used by most researchers for such studies. Diet formulas can be modified to eliminate cholic acid.
