The Jackson Laboratory Mouse Models
Examples of rodent models in which specific phenotypes can be expressed and diseases induced are the many mouse models developed by The Jackson Laboratory.
One of these, the C57BL/6J (B6) male is the most commonly used model of diet-induced obesity (DIO).* Diseases or conditions exhibited by these models can include obesity, visceral adiposity, insulin resistance, hyperinsulinemia, hyperleptinemia, leptin resistance, cardiovascular disorders, and other symptoms associated with the metabolic syndrome.
A typical feeding regimen for the C57BL/6J would be:
Feed Purina LabDiet® 5K52 from weaning (four weeks) to six weeks old.
Then switch to one of two high-fat diets—
Purina TestDiet® 58Y1 ≈45 kcal% fat (a/k/a D12451) or
Purina TestDiet® 58V8 ≈60 kcal% fat (a/k/a D12492);
… or the low-fat control diet
Purina TestDiet® 58Y2 ≈10 kcal% fat (a/k/a D12450B).

The Purina LabDiet® “JL” series of rodent diets.
The Jackson Laboratory exclusively uses diets from Purina LabDiet® for their general breeding purposes. Several of these are now available as the “JL” (“Jackson Lab”) series, including:
