De-Worming Rodent Food–Fenbendazole Diets

 

As you may require for eradicating pinworms in your research animals, we will add Fenbendazole (methyl 5-(phenylthio)-2-benzimidazole carbonate) to any LabDiet^® grain-based food and into any custom TestDiet^® product. The diet is then compressed into convenient pellets.

 

As with all our TestDiet^® products, Fenbendazole diets are typically produced within five business days or less. Gamma-irradiation is provided free for all Fenbendazole diets; however, you may need to plan an extra 10 business days if you require irradiation.

 

Indications & Use

The almost-universally used concentration is 150 ppm. To eliminate intestinal pinworms, the typical regimen** is to feed fenbendazole diet 7 days for weeks 1, 3, 5, 7, and 9; and feed a corresponding untreated diet during weeks 2, 4, 6, and 8.  The total treatment regimen is 9 weeks.

 

**From the Abstract: Syphacia muris parasitism was eliminated from rats and voles by feeding fenbendazole-medicated chow (150 ppm) for five 7-day periods; treatment periods were separated by 7-day periods of feeding non-medicated chow, yielding a total treatment course of 9 weeks. No other manipulations to facilitate eradication . . . were done. . . . In rats, pinworm eggs persisted at high levels for 2 weeks after the start of treatment, but no eggs were found after 22 days.
