Comparative Research Data on Mice
Comparing TestDiet® 5755 purified ingredient Basal Diet

to LabDiet® 5015 grain-based Mouse Feed

Mouse Research

ICR mice were used for these growth studies. Four successive generations of animals were used to follow any nutrient depletion if present. The performance comparison is made against the natural grain-based LabDiet® 5015 which is known to provide excellent nutrition for mice. These animals were fed the respective rations in meal form during a 21-day test period and then saved as breeder animals for the successive generation. There were 10 males and 10 females in each generation test. Following the growth phase of the above studies, the animals were maintained on the same diets until breeding age and served as the breeder pairs in this study. Each breeding pair was maintained through the production of a maximum of four litters. Thus, if 10 breeding females were used in each phase of this three-generation study, a maximum of 120 litters were possible for that dietary treatment.

Conclusions

The reproductive performance of the breeder animals maintained for three generations on the respective diets was excellent. The growth rate and the 20-day weights of the young from each generation of breeders were normal and uniform. There was no evidence of nutrient depletion in any of the animals throughout the three-generation breeding study. The results attained by the animals on the purified ingredient TestDiet® 5755 ("Basal Diet") were not significantly different from those of the animals receiving the grain-based LabDiet® 5015 mouse feed.
